Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic pollutants and spreads in the environment according to its affinity to several compartments. Aquatic macrophytes, such as Eichhornia crassipes, are known as sites for accumulation of Hg and methylmercury formation. The objective of this research was to observe Hg distribution among air, water and whole plants of the macrophyte E. crassipes for 17?days. The distribution of a single 203Hg spike was evaluated by gamma spectrometry. Two experiments, with and without macrophytes, were made, and the compartments analyzed for the presence of Hg were air, 0.2-μm filtered water, suspended and settled particles, roots, leafs, petioles and adsorption on the desiccators walls. 203Hg was detected in all analyzed compartments, and the highest total Hg concentrations were found in the roots and particles of the incubations with and without macrophytes that retained in average 68 and 34?% of added Hg, respectively. On the other hand, the lowest concentrations were found in air for both incubations, with higher volatilization (up to 2.5?% of added Hg) in the absence of macrophytes. The lower Hg values in leafs and petioles suggest this plant has mechanisms of Hg retention in the roots. Results suggest this macrophyte promotes changes in the Hg cycle since it attracts most Hg present in water and particulate to its roots and settled particles underneath and also reduces Hg volatilization. 相似文献

The first occurrence of arachnids (Aphantomartus pustulatus) in the Carboniferous strata of Portugal is documented and its palaeobiogeographic significance is assessed. The Aphantomartidae species are thought to be native to Central Europe where its oldest example is recorded in Middle–Upper Mississippian strata. Known occurrences are preserved along the flanks of mountains such as the Appalachian Mountains, the Cantabrian Mountains and the Valongo Anticline (Portugal, Iberian Massif) and provide clear evidence that the Aphantomartidae species probably lived in upland or mountainous environments. The Iberian Massif may have served as a ‘link’ between the migration routes of several terrestrial animals from North America and Eurasia, and this linkage constrains the palaeogeographic and palaeoenvironmental conditions in equatorial Pangaea during the Carboniferous and Early Permian. The present obliquity of Mercury is very low (less than 0.1°), which led previous studies to always adopt a nearly zero obliquity during the planet’s past evolution. However, the initial orientation of Mercury’s rotation axis is unknown and probably much different than today. As a consequence, we believe that the obliquity could have been significant when the rotation rate of the planet first encountered spin-orbit resonances. In order to compute the capture probabilities in resonance for any evolutionary scenario, we present in full detail the dynamical equations governing the long-term evolution of the spin, including the obliquity contribution.The secular spin evolution of Mercury results from tidal interactions with the Sun, but also from viscous friction at the core-mantle boundary. Here, this effect is also regarded with particular attention. Previous studies show that a liquid core enhances drastically the chances of capture in spin-orbit resonances. We confirm these results for null obliquity, but we find that the capture probability generally decreases as the obliquity increases. We finally show that, when core-mantle friction is combined with obliquity evolution, the spin can evolve into some unexpected configurations as the synchronous or the 1/2 spin-orbit resonance. 相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet-B (0.4 W m−2) radiation on the abundance, diversity and heterotrophic metabolism of bacterioneuston and bacterioplankton communities from
Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) were assessed and compared to those of freshwater communities from Lake Vela (Portugal) in microcosm
experiments. Exposure to 9 h of artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR) led to 24–33% reduction in bacterial abundance and
up to a 70% decrease in bacterial diversity. Maximum extracellular enzyme activity and monomer incorporation rates were reduced
by 16–90% and 80–100%, respectively. Recovery of bacterial activity during post-UV dark incubations ranged from 10 to 100%
for extracellular enzyme activity and 40% for monomer incorporation rates. In general, the heterotrophic activity of bacterioneuston
was more inhibited by UVR than that of bacterioplankton. However, DGGE profiles revealed greater UVR-induced reductions in
the diversity of bacterioplankton compared to bacterioneuston. The similarity between bacterioneuston and bacterioplankton
communities in samples collected at early morning was lower than at noon (pre-exposed communities) and increased upon experimental
irradiation, possibly indicating selection for UV-resistant bacteria. The observation that UV exposure resulted in enhanced
reduction of bacterioneuston activity, but a lower reduction in bacterial diversity accompanied by enhanced dark recovery
potential compared to bacterioplankton, indicates re-directioning of bacterioneuston metabolism towards stress defence/recovery
strategies rather than the sustained heterotrophic metabolism. Our results indicate that UVR can significantly decrease the
abundance, diversity and activity of bacteria inhabiting the surface and sub-surface layers of freshwater and estuarine systems
with potentially important impacts on the biogeochemical cycles in these environments. 相似文献

The formation and emplacement of syn-collisional mafic dykes that intrude suture zones and their association with orogenic processes are enigmatic. Southern Iberia records the Late Paleozoic amalgamation of Pangea and exposes today a fragment of Laurussia (South Portuguese Zone), which is spatially juxtaposed with autochthonous Gondwana. Fault-bounded oceanic metasedimentary rocks, mélanges and ophiolite complexes characterize the suture zone and are in turn crosscut by intrusive granitoid rocks and mafic dykes. The generation and emplacement of these mafic dykes and their relationship to the suture zone are undetermined. Field evidence shows the dykes were emplaced at high angles to pre-existing orogenic fabrics in the mélange, granitoid and metasedimentary rocks. Geochemical analyses (major, trace, rare earth elements) indicate the dykes exhibit a mid-ocean ridge basalt signature. U/Pb zircon geochronology reveals the crystallization age of the dykes is ca. 316 Ma and Sm–Nd isotopic analysis suggests a deep mantle source. Taken together, these data support existing temporal constraints on events leading up to the amalgamation of Pangea, and suggest progressive lower crustal delamination during the waning stages of continent–continent collision. 相似文献

Soil contamination assessments can be improved with new methods aimed at the accurate estimation of the volume and extension of contaminated soil to be remediated. Geostatistical models that use secondary information to characterize soil contamination are incorporated into a new integration model to provide accurate three-dimensional maps. The proposed integration model is based on a stochastic inversion approach and uses sequential indicator simulation. A two-dimensional reference image representing the areal extension of the contamination is combined with local measurements of contamination in the vertical direction, to render a three-dimensional contamination map. To demonstrate how well the integration model performs, the case study presented focuses on geophysical data and how it can be integrated with soil contamination measurements to improve the characterization of a contaminated site. The results show that the model reproduces successfully the reference image thus providing an accurate three-dimensional contamination map. 相似文献

We present a program for observations of spectroscopic binaries with VLTI. The aim of such observations is to obtain high
accuracy measurements of stellar parameters, in particular masses, combining the visual orbit with spectroscopic orbital elements.
We selected a sample of spectroscopic binaries, including pre-main sequence stars, using the estimated angular nodal separation
as a criterion for feasibility. A cross-check with the 4th catalog of measurements of binary stars (Hartkopf, 2001) was carried
out and we discuss the statistical properties of the sample.

This paper deals with a detailed analysis of spectral and imaging observations of the November 5, 1998 (Hα 1B, GOES M1.5)
flare obtained over a large spectral range, i.e., from hard X-rays to radiometric wavelengths. These observations allowed us to probe electron acceleration and transport
over a large range of altitudes that is to say within small-scale (a few 103 km) and large-scale (a few 105 km) magnetic structures. The observations combined with potential and linear force-free magnetic field extrapolations allow
us to show that: (i) Flare energy release and electron acceleration are basically driven by loop–loop interactions at two
independent, low lying, null points of the active region magnetic field; (ii) <300 keV hard X-ray-producing electrons are
accelerated by a different process (probably DC field acceleration) than relativistic electrons that radiate the microwave
emission; and (iii) although there is evidence that hard X-ray and decimetric/metric radio-emitting electrons are produced
by the same accelerator, the present observations and analysis did not allow us to find a clear and direct magnetic connection
between the hard X-ray emitting region and the radio-emitting sources in the middle corona. 相似文献
